JustWaitingForAMate reminded me this exists:
There is no doubt in my mind that if it was available here I'd have bought it before the Sonic.
Most of you probably know I had a Kia Forte before the Sonic. Surprisingly I actually really liked my Kia. In fact I'm still a huge fan of the Kia brand, but I'd like to see some sportier offerings. This is one of those, and it's not for US
It's got the same 1.6L turbo from the Veloster, good for 201 hp and 195 lb feet of torque. It's closer to GTi than FiST in size, so it's not super fast. Reviews I've read have praised it well enough
Oh, and it has Recaros
When I say I'd have it, I mean I'd literally have used my money to buy it and I'd be driving one home after this post instead of my Sonic.
So tell me Oppo, what would be in your driveway now if it was available where you live?

Aside the obvious answers:
It's not that they aren't available but the imported ones are absurdly expensive. If they were ever intended to be sold USDM, and have their proper market value, I would totally have bought one.

Do cars that can technically be imported under show and display but were never sold here new count?

In Gunmetal Gray or Silver, it's terrible to have X Plan and nothing to use it on.

Renault R5. Guess I could import one to Canada but would be nice if available here.

...scratches head, can't think of anything.
I can't buy (for example) a Ford F something pickup, any kind of Chevrolet, a Toyota Camry or a Cadillac. Don't miss any of these.

Attainable cars? LHD Escort RS Cosworth, of course!
![]() 11/21/2014 at 18:05 |

Technically speaking, there are no cars that aren't available here - we have fairly lax import rules, even by the standards of countries that aren't America or Canada - but, in the spirit of the question: Autozam AZ-1!

New car:
It's a tough choice. If the Peugeot RCZ was RWD, it would be no contest. However, it would be tough to choose between the Ford Ranger T6 and VW Scirocco R, or Euro-spec Alfa Romeo 4C. But one stands above all:
The Land Rover Defender!
As for older cars, that's less of a question. Definitely a R32 GT-R. I'm assuming that if it was sold in the US, finding a used one would be similar pricing to that of finding one in Japan right now, instead of the exorbitant import prices people are paying.
If the R32 doesn't "count" because it's past the 25-year rule, I'd get (rather than cheating and saying an R33 or R34) it would be a Nissan President Limo.
Because fuck you that's why.
![]() 11/21/2014 at 18:11 |

One of these.
I'm legitimately considering selling both of my current cars to import one of these as soon as I can next year... there's nothing wrong with spending $10k+ on a 25 year old Japanese grand tourer, right?

Cost no object, or price-dependent? If the latter, this:
With a manual, of course, and preferably a diesel; this color is nice, so I probably wouldn't need for it to be brown (I know, I know - I'm ruining all of the stereotypes...)

Of all of the American 70's car to choose from, you take a Pinto wagon?
Why?

I like the Kia a lot, and I would probably buy it's less interesting American sold Forte SX brother if I had the money, but not stealing your choice:
Fuck Jeep. Fuck Land Rover. I don't need a status symbol, I want a hard core, bare bones SUV.

Yup. I have no envy of VWs or BMWs, or JDM Toyotas or Hondas. But I would LOVE to have an old Niva. With appropriate modifications of course, you know, so I don't die of fume inhalation.

I owned a Mercedes B200 Turbo when I lived in Canada, it was a terrific car. I want to buy another, but living in the USA no dice.

These things are like a Swiss Army knife, everything folds down, and the panoramic roof is awesome.

The Brera is drop dead gorgeous, but the 159 is roomier and more comfortable in everyday situations. That said, I'd buy both in a heartbeat.

Consider it an example, rather than a specific choice. Just that 'grass is always greener' thing.
We got this at the time, which isn't bad either:

![]() 11/21/2014 at 19:37 |

No offense, but the point of this exercise was cars you could afford. I'd love a Maloo, but way too expensive. Good call on the VXR though
![]() 11/21/2014 at 19:38 |
|
This may have sold me on the Focus ST
![]() 11/21/2014 at 19:39 |

The intention was to choose a car you could have had instead of the one you do.
For example, a Holden Maloo R8 would be very high on my cost no-object list, but I couldn't afford one

I like the Civic. That would be another good alternate for me

Toyota Mega Cruiser for cruising around in the winter
Peugeot RCZ for some fun in the twistys
Suzuki Carry for runs to the hardware store
Lada Niva for offroading

Someone beat me to it, but no doubt one of these. Escort Cosworth. Weird, zaney turbo manual AWD goodness that you could daily drive everyday? Hell yes.
Option 2. Any TVR really. I just love how weird they are. The door handles under the mirror, there's a procedure just to start it, the door handle to get out is a button on the bottom of the dash, the window controls were tiny knobs that you turn, everything's weird and strange, yet special. And it's super barn-door. It'll never do a lap quickly, but it'll be loud and fun.

I guess my transportation requirements have become rather modest as I've aged. A couple of years ago I wanted a Jetta Sportwagen TDI 6MT, but because of price and availablility I compromised and bought a Mazda5 6MT instead. I've had MBs and BMWs in the past, but no longer have the desire to have such a vehicle. These days I just want a nice manual transmission-equipped wagon of some sort. That Mazda is drop-dead gorgeous, and if it was available in the states I'd have it instead of the Jetta.
![]() 11/21/2014 at 20:20 |

Ok.
![]() 11/21/2014 at 20:31 |
|
These really aren't available here?
![]() 11/21/2014 at 20:33 |
|
That happens to all of us. The Maloo isn't 'modest', but it's a little truck with a V8, that would be awesome.
I just want a C5 or C6 Corvette to pair with my Sonic and I'll be happy. I wish I knew that before I bought my Sonic, but no point living in the past!
![]() 11/21/2014 at 20:55 |

Unfortunately, no. They are only available under show and display and even then, they can only be drive 2,500 miles a year.

I'd have a BMW 1 series 3 door hatchback, with a small diesel engine.

Since the Hilux is already taken, I'll go with one of the other two cars I've always wanted for god knows what reason.
Honda Beat
or Suzuki Cappuccino

Oh, well in that case I guess my answer would be "Peel P50"
